This week in athletics

 

Cross Country participated in the James Earley Invitational at Westfield State University on Saturday, Oct. 7 with the majority of the field hailing from NCAA Division II and III programs. The men’s program finished 31st out of 37 teams with a total time of 2:42:18.78. Subri Ismail was the first Vikings’ runner to cross the finish line in 92nd place with a time of 29:03.39.

The women’s cross country team participated in the 5K race at the James Earley Invitational at Westfield State University on Saturday morning. Sarah Rosenberger was the first Vikings’ runner to cross the finish line, placing 181st with a time of 22:38.92.

The cross country programs will be back in action for the annual conference meet to be held at SUNY Adirondack on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Football (1-5) lost 46-7 to Milford Academy (6-1) on Saturday night at Hudson Valley’s Outdoor Athletic Complex. Milford jumped out to an early 13-0 lead before the Vikings offense hit for a 75-yard touchdown pass as Wesley Manning found Edwin Baez down field for the the score, cutting into Milford’s lead 13-7.

During halftime, the Hudson Valley Athletics Department honored its newest members of the Vikings Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2017. Former Football Head Coach Bob Jojo; former Football Players Emmanuel Marc and Darnell Stapleton; Lindsey Bradt, women’s basketball; Tracy Chesebrough (Sears), softball; Kristina Jenkins, bowling; Willie Hammett, contributor, and the 2001 National Champions men’s ice hockey team were also inducted into the Hall of Fame earlier on Saturday afternoon.

Men’s Soccer (8-4) won its third straight match after defeating North Country, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at home. Luke Mara and Garrett Axtmann both scored for the Vikings and Benjamin Peay recorded five saves in the win.

Axtmann also was named men’s soccer NJCAA Division III National Player of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks. Axtmann was named the NJCAA Region III Player of the Week earlier today.

Men’s soccer will be home Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m. against Broome.

Women’s Soccer (7-4) exploded for five goals in the second half as the Vikings defeated North Country, 8-1, on Sunday afternoon at home. Sophomore Sydney Buhrke scored three goals, all in the second half, and the Vikings leading scorer, Sydnee Metzold, added two goals and two assists in the Vikings win.

Women’s soccer is home Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. against Broome.

Women’s Volleyball (7-10) went on the road and defeated Adirondack in straight sets 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-23) on Wednesday evening. Hudson Valley’s seven wins are the most since 2010 when the Vikings finished the year 11-10.

The Vikings combined for 39 kills with 39 assists and added four service aces, six blocks and 91 digs. In the three-set match, five Vikings surpassed double-digits in digs with Megan Woods leading the way with a match-high 30 digs. Kirstin Wood finished with 17 digs and added five kills against the Timberwolves.

Volleyball is on the road at Fulton-Montgomery Wednesday, Oct. 11 with a scheduled start time of 7 p.m.
