Thoughts from Campus Ministry

Winter — the season of hope

When I first moved to the U.S. just over 10 years ago, I remember how excited I was to see snow for the first time. That excitement was quickly tempered by the accompanying experience of bitter cold temperatures and limited daylight. Over time, I have come to appreciate a deep spirituality in the winter season.

Though the winter season is dark, cold and barren, we can already notice the darkness receding as the days gradually grow longer. Just below the frozen soil, the seeds of new life are prepared to sprout when the conditions are right. Though there are many weeks of winter left, we know that the warmth will surely come again and the landscape will be lush and green once more. This gives us hope as we endure the winter season.

May this hope be evident as we strive to reach our full potential this semester. Take that course you have been dreading, but need to take to achieve your goals. Go the extra mile to help a friend, neighbor, co-worker or a new student on campus. Be compassionate to yourself and to others.

As the season of winter slowly gives way to the new life of spring, may you experience the same transformation in your lives throughout this semester.
