Thoughts from Campus Ministry: Busyness

Being busy is an inevitable part of modern life. I am always amazed at how busy and overcommitted I am at this time of the year, despite my best intentions to leave space for downtime. I know that many students, while just recovering from the stress of midterms, are already gearing up for finals and for the next semester! Here are a few tips for overcoming busyness and the stress it creates:

Sleep
Usually the first thing to suffer during times of stress is sleep. Overcome the temptation to stay up late in order to be more “productive.” Productivity will be improved in the long term by going to bed on time.

Relationships
Get up from the computer or desk and visit with a colleague or call a friend.

Meditate
Spend 10 minutes a day doing nothing. This can be a great way to start your day but it can be done at any moment during the day. Find a comfortable place to simply sit and release the negative thoughts of the day. The interfaith prayer room on the second floor of the Campus Center provides a space for quiet meditation.

Prioritize
Become intentional about doing more of the things that are in keeping with your values, goals and priorities. Minimize activities that seem pressing, but actually are not (e.g. constantly checking e-mail or doing any activity that feels productive in order to justify procrastination).

May the busyness of the fall season give way to moments of rejuvenation and renewal.

Peace and blessings,
