It has often been quoted that about seven to 10 percent of our communication is conveyed through the words we speak while the remain 90 to 93 percent is nonverbal (body language and tone of voice). While we may debate the actual percentages, few can deny the intuitive sense that this observation is largely true.
In the age of the smart phone, where texting and social media dominate over voice communication, the potential for misunderstandings has increased (think of the high incidence of celebrity damage control over their tweets!). One-hundred-and-forty-character communication just isn’t enough when it comes to maintaining relationships with the people we care about the most.
This week, take the time to make that phone call you have been putting off. Meet up with that long lost friend to catch up over cup of coffee. Write a “snail mail” letter to a friend or loved one. Through these simple acts, we nourish our most important relationships.
