Today is the National Day of Prayer. People across the country from many different religious traditions will pause today to pray for one another and for the nation.
So what is prayer? The broadest definition I can think of is this: Prayer is the act of connecting with a transcendent reality.
While many mainstream religious traditions understand this reality to be God, we often experience transcendence in our everyday lives: in the beauty of nature, in our children, in the practice of meditation, in a cause, and in the goodness of others that always seem to rise over darkness.
Let us take some time today to give thanks for the freedom to connect with the transcendent according to our traditions. Let us together call forth the things most of our diverse traditions desire: a caring, peaceful, and just society.
Peace and Blessings,
