Peter Fil, assistant professor of Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), and his family traveled to Las Vegas from July 27 to 29 for the 2nd PanAm Mulimpia, where Fil earned three first-place finishes out of four events in Haidong Gumdo.
The Mulimpia is an open martial arts competition that focuses on Haidong Gumdo (Korean art of the sword), Taekwondo, Tangsoodo, and Hosinsul with continental championships and world championships every other year. With over 500 competitors from 14 countries, Fil received first place in individual form, group form and individual paper cutting, using a wooden sword, in his division. About 18 months away from his black belt, Fil is currently a red belt and assistant leadership team member at Master Yang’s Martial Center in Latham, which came home with the best school award.
This is Fil’s third Mulimpia competition. He earned two continental golds and one world gold in South Korea last year. His two sons also won numerous medals in both Taekwondo and Haidong Gumdo, and were supported by Fil’s wife, Adrienne, who is a practitioner of Alpha Krav Maga. Fil currently teaches in the CAD certificate program at Hudson Valley.
