Hudson Valley Community College has retained Isaacson, Miller, the national executive search firm (www.imsearch.com), to help with our search for a Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA). Kate Barry, Donna Cramer, and Elizabeth Dorr, search consultants with the firm, will be working closely with us over the coming months.
All faculty, staff and students are invited to an Open Forum with Isaacson, Miller on Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 2:15-2:45 pm in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center Auditorium.
The consultants goal for this meeting is to learn about your role at the college and how you would expect to interface with the new VPAA, about the position itself, as well as what you consider to be the key opportunities and challenges that s/he will face. These discussions will help our search consultants gain further understanding of our culture, current environment, and the organizational context in which the new VPAA will operate. In particular, they hope to hear your thoughts on the following:
- In hiring this person, what will be the fundamental differences here at Hudson Valley one year from now, three years from now, and five years from now?
- What are subjective and informal measures that will help determine the success of the individual in the VPAA role?
- Based on the objectives identified, what do you think are the qualifications and experience of an ideal candidate? What is essential, and what might be helpful? What are the personal attributes most important for this role?
These questions were developed to help us think about the ways that we can tangibly assess candidates and measure the success of a new VPAA.
Our search consultants will also ask for your suggestions of people to contact in their outreach to build a deep and diverse pool of candidates for this position. They will draw upon their own networks, but want to make sure they tap into ours as well. They will welcome suggestions of possible candidates, but recommendations of thoughtful sources who might lead them to strong candidates are just as important. Once the consultants have had the opportunity to speak with people here, our Isaacson, Miller team will synthesize what they have learned into a position profile that will provide a compelling description of the college, its history and mission, as well as a realistic and appealing picture of the challenges, measures of success, and ideal skills, experience and qualifications of the new VPAA. When finalized, this document will be made available and shared broadly by the search firm with potential candidates and helpful sources.
