Tuesday, Feb. 18: Register to be a bone marrow donor

Be A Hudson Valley Hero and Save A Life!

If you are between the ages of 18 and 44, come join the Be The Match Marrow Donor Registry. It’s easy, it’s free, and it takes just a few minutes!

Tuesday, Feb. 18
11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Siek Campus Center, first floor lobby

Important Facts
Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with leukemia or another blood cancer. For many, the only cure is a bone marrow transplant. But thousands of patients have no match simply because there isn’t a donor match in the family, and there aren’t enough potential donors in the worldwide marrow registry.

Help Expand the Donor Registry!
Joining takes less than five minutes.
All you do is (1) be willing to donate (2) register on your phone, and (3) swab your cheeks.
Joining the registry is completely free.

Though race has no genetic basis, a potential donor’s genes (HLAs) match the patient’s ethnic background. All donors are needed, but those urgently needed are African Americans, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Latinos, Native Americans and people of multiracial backgrounds.

If you can’t register on Tuesday, Feb. 18, join by texting CURE23 to 61474.

This Be The Match Marrow Donor Registry Drive is sponsored by Health Services.

Additional Facts
The chances of being called to donate are 1 in 430.
If you are a match, Be The Match will contact you!

It is not painful to donate. Today, 90% of donors provide marrow stem cells through a peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donation. This is a nonsurgical procedure. Your blood is removed through a needle in one arm and passed through a machine that collects only the blood-forming stem cells. The remaining blood is returned through a needle in your other arm. (Only 10% of bone marrow donations today require a surgical procedures. In these cases, general anesthesia is used, and the donor feels no pain.)

In the event you become a match someone, the donor registry and the health insurance company of the recipient patient pick up all costs for you and a friend: travel, lodging, food, and medical costs associated with the marrow transplant.
