VMware is being discontinued on May 19

Hello HVCC community,

This notice is to announce the end of life for VMware, the system that has powered our VDI system for many years. To improve security, reliability and continue using a supported version of Microsoft Windows, we have decided to disable VMware Horizon View as of May 19, 2021. Many users and offices have already migrated to the replacement system, Citrix. For the rest of you, now is the time.

What should I do to prepare for this change?

  • ON YOUR WORK DESKTOP:
      • No action is necessary to prepare unless you wish to migrate before the May 19 transition. On May 19, when your office computer starts up, it will launch Citrix instead of VMware. If your computer was already on, you might need to reboot it to effect the change.
  • ON YOUR LAPTOP OR PERSONAL DEVICE:
    • If you are already using Citrix, then no action is necessary. Otherwise, please complete one of the following steps before May 19:

What will happen on May 19?
On or after May 19, the only way to get to a remote or virtual desktop is through the Citrix client. The VMware client will no longer function.

What will be different in the Citrix Environment?
Not much. It mirrors the current ACE build that you see in all classrooms. The operating system and MS Office versions have been updated, and there are some minor look/feel differences. We’ve prepared a couple of concise videos to highlight some of the changes. Those training videos are located in Blackboard under My OrganizationsITS Training.

Do I need to wait until May 19?
No, feel free to install the Citrix client now to have only a minor interruption in your work. If you would like assistance, please contact the helpdesk at techsupport@hvcc.edu or (518) 629-7364

Thank you, be safe.
