To all students,
As we begin the Fall 2022 semester, I wish to welcome all students and to remind each of you about some important safety and parking tips.
Driving To/From Campus
Please drive carefully at all times; slow down and avoid distracted driving. The use of cell phones without hands-free devices is illegal and frequently causes accidents. Texting while driving also is illegal and extremely dangerous.
Be alert to the students walking to/from College Suites, the student apartments at the top of Morrison Avenue. Pedestrians in a crosswalk always have the right of way!
On Campus
The speed limit on campus is 15 mph. Please slow down and drive carefully (including when backing out of parking spaces). Campus Peace Officers, as well as local police, will issue tickets for all moving violations.
Please register your vehicle on the college’s electronic system.
It can be accessed here: https://www.hvcc.edu/publicsafety/parking.html
Parking on campus continues to be in high demand during peak times.
When lots and the garage are full, ample overflow parking is available across the street from campus on Route 4 and South Road (behind the Panera restaurant). Also, Public Safety staff will direct drivers to other overflow locations, depending on demand. DO NOT park on curbs or other grass areas unless directed to do so by Public Safety staff.
Parking Garage on South Road
Students are prohibited from parking on Levels 2 and 3 of the parking garage, where spaces are reserved for faculty/staff and are accessible only with a faculty/staff ID. During busy periods, Public Safety officers will guide students to an overflow parking area on Level 4. Otherwise, please do not park in any gated areas.
All other areas in the parking garage are available to students – almost 500 spaces. Motorcycle parking spaces are available on the first floor of the garage (west side), and in B lots on the north side of campus.
Note: one way traffic on the first level; please be alert to signage and directions from Public Safety staff.
Please park only in legal areas!
Do not park on grass, sidewalks, or block other cars.
Do not park in the Hudson Valley Plaza /Price Chopper parking lot across Route 4. You will be towed!
Be Safe – Both On and Off Campus
Secure valuable items, such as lap-top computers and smart phones, and always lock your car and be alert as you exit your vehicle. Be aware of your surroundings while walking on campus. Report thefts and other incidents promptly (campus security camera video is saved for only up to one week).
A safe environment is the college’s top priority, but everyone is encouraged always to be vigilant and contact Public Safety (518-629-7210). If you see something, say something.
Take advantage of Public Safety’s campus escort service by calling (518) 629-7210.
Public safety also can unlock cars and provide jump starts – at no charge!

Some additional safety measures to consider:
- Equip your iPhone, iPad, etc. with GPS location services that can be helpful in recovering lost or stolen items.
- Follow Public Safety on Twitter (@hvpublicsafety) for information, traffic updates and emergency announcements.
- Sign up for Alertus and NY Alert to receive traffic and other emergency notifications: https://www.hvcc.edu/publicsafety/emergency/communication.html
- Off campus, please be careful in large crowds. Do not participate in illegal, underage gatherings where alcohol is consumed. Recently, violent incidents have occurred near these large parties. Be alert and aware.
