What you need to know about Mobile Devices and Blackboard

Our new Blackboard theme is more mobile device compatible than before, and the Blackboard app allows you to view and participate in your courses. BUT, the app and mobile browsers do not replace the need for a computer as there are many Blackboard features and tools your professors use in your classes that aren’t accessible via the app or a mobile web browser.

What you can do with the App:

  • Grades
    • You can view your grades, but feedback from your professors is limited as some feedback will only be available through a web browser such as rubrics which only show descriptions and point values. Any written feedback from the professor is only available in a web browser, or comments on inline graded assignments.
  • Tests and Assignments
    • You can submit assignments through the app either by adding text or attaching a file from cloud storage. While mobile-compatible tests can only contain one of the following question types, True/False, Multiple Choice, Short Answer, Essay, Either/Or to be fully functional for Blackboard app or mobile browser users.
    • Any images or math editor content will not display to you on a mobile device. If the test contains questions that you can’t complete in the app, you are alerted to use a web browser, but remember the mobile web browser may not provide you with all functionality you need to complete the test.
    • Additionally, you won’t be able to review any tests you submit without opening them in a mobile browser, which may also not show all feedback provided to you.
  • Due dates
    • The app will show you due dates for tests and assignments as specified by your professor. Due dates for discussion boards do not show.
  • Course Content
    • Most content displays in the app, but if the content isn’t supported within the app, it will open in the in-app web browser. Again, images will not display inline with text and some course materials provided may only be available through a web browser.
  • Discussions
    • You can read discussion board posts, start threads, and reply to posts. You can also add attachments from your mobile device or cloud storage. Once again, images will not display inline with text, so if your class discussions include images you will need to use a web browser.

Additionally, you may find Blackboard App Help informative as it provides details on all the features available through the app.
