Hudson Valley Community College lost a long-time member of the campus community with the passing of Professor Emeritus John Roy on Tuesday morning, Jan. 2. Father of Ethan Roy, an assistant professor in the English, Foreign Languages and ESL department, John was an integral part of the college community for 40 years.
John began teaching at the college in 1967, rose to full professor before his retirement in 2000, and then continued as an adjunct until 2007. In addition to teaching a wide range of courses, such as art history, folklore, and composition, John was a founding member of the Academic Senate, a long-time officer for the Faculty Association, a member of the Faculty Council of Community Colleges, a member of the SUNY Writing Council, an executive board member and vice president of the Associated Community College Faculties, and an advisor for The Hudsonian.
John also received the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1987 and Professional Service in 1995, and he was the first recipient of the Marco J. Silvestri Award in 2006.
A memorial service will be held at the Gardner Earl Memorial Chapel in the Oakwood Cemetery at 186 Oakwood Ave. in Troy on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m.
John was an outstanding colleague and friend for many members of the campus community, and he will be greatly missed. Please keep John, Ethan, and their families in your thoughts.
