{"id":1095,"date":"2013-02-27T12:49:04","date_gmt":"2013-02-27T17:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/a-woman-aint-i-comes-to-hudson-valley-stage-on-thursday\/"},"modified":"2013-02-27T12:49:04","modified_gmt":"2013-02-27T17:49:04","slug":"a-woman-aint-i-comes-to-hudson-valley-stage-on-thursday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/a-woman-aint-i-comes-to-hudson-valley-stage-on-thursday\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cA Woman Ain\u2019t I?\u201d Comes to Hudson Valley Stage on Thursday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The life of Sojourner Truth, a former slave turned abolitionist and women&#8217;s rights advocate, is dramatically recreated by actress Kathryn Woods through Truth&#8217;s own words and spiritual music on Thursday, Feb. 28 at noon in the Bulmer Communications Center Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>Staff, students and the general public are invited to this free performance.<\/p>\n<p>Truth, born in New York in 1797, was a slave until she escaped after 29 years. She waged and won a court battle for custody of her infant son who was illegally sold to a Southern slaveholder after slavery was abolished in the state of New York.<\/p>\n<p>In her early years of freedom, Truth worked with Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, as well as the Freedman&#8217;s Relief Association near the end of the Civil War.
