For faculty who teach face-to-face classes,<\/strong><\/span> the new Attendance Tool in Blackboard<\/em> provides a welcome feature. (Note:<\/strong><\/span> the Attendance Tool is not designed for use in online courses.)<\/p>\n

To access this Tool,<\/strong><\/span> go to Course Tools<\/strong> on your Control Panel<\/strong>, and then select Attendance<\/strong>.\u00a0 The Attendance<\/strong> window that opens offers two views, Overall<\/strong> and Meeting<\/strong>, which you can toggle between using the Overall<\/strong> and Meeting<\/strong> buttons in the upper right corner of the Attendance<\/strong> window:<\/p>\n

In Meeting<\/em> view (see below),<\/strong><\/span> you see a table with a list of the students in your course, and check boxes to the right of each student\u2019s name, which allow you to mark each student as Present, Late, Absent or Excused.\u00a0 The table in this view is labeled Today<\/strong>, and refers to the current date.<\/p>\n

If you mark a student as Present,<\/strong><\/span> a score of 100<\/span> <\/strong>will display for that student. Similarly, a student marked as Late receives a score of 50<\/strong><\/span>, and a student marked as absent a score of 0<\/strong><\/span>. If you mark a student as Excused, the box containing that student\u2019s attendance score displays as blank grey (see the screenshots below).<\/p>\n

In Overall<\/em> view (see below),<\/strong><\/span> you see 5 columns, with the Today<\/strong> column appearing on the far right, and columns for the four previous days appearing to the left of the Today<\/strong> column. Above the table in Overall<\/strong> view, you see displayed the overall attendance score-to-date for your class, the percentage and number of students who have perfect attendance (i.e., those students who have attendance scores of 100<\/strong>), the percentage and number who have average attendance (those students who have attendance scores from 50<\/strong> to 99<\/strong>), and the percentage who have below-average attendance (those students whose attendance scores are below 50<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

At the completion of your course,<\/strong><\/span> you can also use the Attendance Tool to download, save and\/or print out the overall attendance record and statistics for that course. To do this, select the Export<\/strong> button in the upper-right of the Attendance<\/strong> window (see below). When you do this, you will be prompted to save your Attendance<\/strong> report to your computer (in MS Excel<\/em>-compatible format).<\/p>\n

Final Note:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0If you access the Attendance Tool, Blackboard<\/em> will automatically generate an Attendance<\/strong> column in your course Grade Center. This Attendance<\/strong> column cannot be deleted, so if you\u2019ve accessed the Attendance Tool, but don\u2019t plan on using it, you will want to hide the column from your student\u2019s view (How do I do that?<\/strong><\/em><\/a>), otherwise, your students may become confused when they see an item called Attendance<\/strong> in their My Grades<\/strong> view.<\/p>\n
