Bulmer Award for Excellence in Library Research<\/a>\u00a0is an annual award administered by The Foundation. The recipient is chosen by the college librarians after thorough examination of all nominated papers according to award criteria. Papers are accepted from both faculty and students, and are submitted online via the Bulmer Award research guide see Nominate Online.**<\/p>\n<p><strong>To be eligible for the Bulmer Award, the\u00a0initial\u00a0criteria are::<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cA\u201d paper<\/li>\n<li>5 or more sources<\/li>\n<li>2 or more source types (source types defined as periodicals, academic journals, magazines, books, websites, interviews, as examples)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If a nominated paper meets these minimum initial criteria, the library faculty further examine the quality of the research in terms of:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Extensiveness\u00a0of bibliography (example: 8 credible sources preferred over 5 credible sources).<\/li>\n<li>Mix\u00a0of source types (example: 5 or more source types carry more weight in evaluation than 2 or 3 source types). The award seeks evidence of initiative, persistence and ingenuity in identifying sources in varying formats.<\/li>\n<li>Critical thinking\u00a0in the\u00a0evaluation\u00a0of the sources for reliability, credibility and appropriateness for subject matter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-87992\" src=\"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/bulmerplaque-4-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What often distinguishes a recipient\u2019s research paper from other nominees\u2019 is the presence of\u00a0proper academic formatting and citation.\u00a0<\/strong>These methods of research paper formatting and citation include, but are not limited to, MLA (Modern Language Association, 8th ed.), commonly used in English and Humanities; APA (American Psychological Association, 6th ed.), widely used in the Social Sciences; and Chicago Manual, used in History studies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What if I write the winning paper?\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Your name is included on the Bulmer Award perpetual plaque, prominently displayed in the library. You also you are formally recognized at Student Honors Convocation, and you receive a monetary award from The Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What students can do and what faculty can emphasize:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Students are encouraged to refer to the Dwight Marvin Library\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hvcc.libguides.com\/citeyoursources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cite Your Sources<\/a>\u00a0guide, among the library\u2019s most heavily used\u00a0research guides.<br \/>\nIt is strongly recommended that students make use of the\u00a0Writing and Research Center\u2019s\u00a0faculty expertise as well as the option of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hvcc.edu\/library\/help\/students-instruction.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making a research appointment with a librarian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>**For more information on selection criteria, to submit a paper online, or to review past recipients and more, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/hvcc.libguides.com\/bulmeraward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Joseph J.
