Bulmer Award for Excellence in Library Research<\/a> is an administered annually by The Foundation. The recipient is chosen by the college librarians after thorough examination of all nominated papers according to award criteria. Papers are accepted from both faculty and students, and are submitted online via the <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.hvcc.edu\/bulmeraward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bulmer Award research guide<\/a> (see Nominate Online).<\/p>\n<p><strong>To be eligible for the Bulmer Award, the initial criteria are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cA\u201d paper<\/li>\n<li>5 or more sources<\/li>\n<li>2 or more source types (source types defined as periodicals, academic journals, magazines, books, websites, interviews, as examples)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If a nominated paper meets these minimum initial criteria, the library faculty further examine the quality of the research in terms of:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Extensiveness of bibliography (example: 8 credible sources preferred over 5 credible sources).<\/li>\n<li>Mix of source types (example: 5 or more source types carry more weight in evaluation than 2 or 3 source types). The award seeks evidence of initiative, persistence and ingenuity in identifying sources in varying formats. Examples include library print materials, electronic databases, videos, credible websites, interviews, or surveys.<\/li>\n<li>Critical thinking in the evaluation of the sources for reliability, credibility and appropriateness for subject matter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-93307 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/BulmerPlaqueSpr2017-1-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"348\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What often distinguishes a recipient\u2019s research paper from those of other nominees\u2019 is the presence of proper academic formatting and citation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These methods of research paper formatting and citation include, but are not limited to, MLA (Modern Language Association, 8th ed.), commonly used in English and Humanities; APA (American Psychological Association, 6th ed.), widely used in the Social Sciences; and Chicago Manual, used in History studies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What if I write the winning paper?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your name is included on the Bulmer Award perpetual plaque, prominently displayed in the library. You also are formally recognized at the Student Honors Convocation, and you receive a $250 award from The Foundation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What students can do and what faculty can emphasize:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students are encouraged to refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.hvcc.edu\/citeyoursources\">Dwight Marvin Library\u2019s Cite Your Sources<\/a> guide, among the library\u2019s most heavily used research guides.<\/li>\n<li>It is strongly recommended that students make use of the Writing and Research Center\u2019s faculty expertise as well as the option of making a research appointment with a librarian.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For more information on selection criteria, to submit a paper online, or to review past recipients and more, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.hvcc.edu\/bulmeraward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Joseph J.
