Writer, novelist, and professor Jamaica Kincaid will speak and share her writing in a free program on Friday, April 12 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Maureen Stapleton Theatre. Time will be allotted for questions from the audience, and Kincaid\u2019s books will be available for sale and signing following the event.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Kincaid, who served as a staff writer for “The New Yorker” for nearly a decade, skillfully softens the boundary between poetry and prose in her books and novels that include \u201cAnnie John,\u201d \u201cLucy,\u201d \u201cAt the Bottom of the River\u201d and \u201cA Small Place.\u201d She has carved out a unique and cherished place in the American literary landscape. Her latest novel, \u201cSee Now Then,\u201d reveals a marriage in all its joys and agonies, examining the ways in which the passing of time affects the consciousness of her characters, a mother, father and their two children living in New England.<\/p>\n

She began her academic career at Harvard University in 1991, holding joint appointments in the English and African American Studies departments, and is currently the Professor of African and African American Studies in Residence at Harvard. Kincaid was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2004, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009, and has won the Lannan Literary Award for Fiction, Anisfield-Wolf Book Award and the Clifton Fadiman Medal.<\/p>\n

All are welcome to attend this event, which is co-sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Program and English, Foreign Languages and English as a Second Language Department.<\/p>\n
