{"id":1336,"date":"2014-04-16T11:50:59","date_gmt":"2014-04-16T15:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/after-the-finish-line-saving-americas-horses-today-at-6-p-m\/"},"modified":"2014-04-16T11:50:59","modified_gmt":"2014-04-16T15:50:59","slug":"after-the-finish-line-saving-americas-horses-today-at-6-p-m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/after-the-finish-line-saving-americas-horses-today-at-6-p-m\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;After the Finish Line: Saving America&#8217;s Horses&#8221; today at 6 p.m."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>When:<\/strong>\u00a0 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 16<br \/>\n<strong>Where:<\/strong> BTC Auditorium<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>After the Finish Line: Saving America\u2019s Horses<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-46129\" alt=\"April16th\" src=\"http:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/April16th-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This evening, please join<strong> Steve Caporizzo<\/strong> of WTEN, the <strong>New York State Humane Association<\/strong> and the HVCC <strong>Animal Outreach Club<\/strong> for a seminar on the fate of America\u2019s horses.<\/p>\n<p>Discussion will be centered on horse racing and slaughter, a practice once legal in the United States; one which continues to be debated as a legal option in the United States, and is legal in Canada and Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the U.S. exports live horses to Canada and Mexico, where slaughter and human consumption are legal. America\u2019s horses are then transported to Europe and Japan for human consumption. Horses from all backgrounds are subject to this end.\u00a0 Ferdinand, the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner, was sold to Japan\u2019s JS Company in the fall of 1994.\u00a0 Reporter Barbara Bayer, author of The Blood Horse who attempted to learn of Ferdinand\u2019s whereabouts, wrote, \u201cNo one can say for sure when and where Ferdinand met his end, but it would seem clear he met it in a slaughterhouse. Ferdinand\u2019s fate is not the exception. It is the rule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The speaker line up is extraordinary: <strong>Dr. Lester Castro Friedlander<\/strong> formerly veterinarian with the USDA and NYS Racing &amp; Wagering, <strong>Susan Kayne, <\/strong>former race enthusiast and\u00a0 thoroughbred expert, <strong>Sharon Boeckle, <\/strong>filmmaker from NYC, the <strong>Canadian Horse Defence Coalition<\/strong>, along with <strong>Steve Caporizzo<\/strong>, and the New York State Humane Association (NYSHA). Author\u00a0<strong>J.R. Anderson&#8217;s<\/strong> telling book, <strong><em>The Fancy Hat Veneer<\/em><\/strong>, on the realities of horse slaughter will be available, and Ms. Anderson will also be speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Area horse rescues will be present and we\u00a0have invited\u00a0and welcome pro-horse racing and pro-slaughter individuals to attend. The goal is to be factual, educational, and eye opening. The <strong>connection between horse racing, drugging and slaughter<\/strong> will be made. Finally, Dr. Holly Cheever from NYSHA will make remarks on what we as citizens can do about this fairly unknown issue of our time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There will be opportunity for audience participation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After this semester, I will be stepping down as Animal Outreach Co-Adviser.
