The Physical Plant Grounds Department implements a prioritized snow removal plan during winter weather conditions, however slippery surfaces are still likely to be encountered.

In order to raise awareness of the potential for icy surfaces and the need for extra precautions, IceAlert® signs are installed throughout the main campus. IceAlert® signs with a blue or partly blue pinwheel signal that freezing or near-freezing conditions exist and the need for extra caution to be used.

Actions we can all take when icy conditions are possible include:

Wear appropriate footwear that is designed for snow and ice when outdoors. Leave your dress shoes at work or carry them with you to and from work.

When entering and/or exiting vehicles, use the vehicle for support.

Look where you are walking. Avoid distractions, such as texting or talking on cell phones.

Use main walkways that have been salted or shoveled. Don’t take shortcuts over snow piles or areas where snow and ice removal is not feasible.

Look ahead and test the travel path for slickness by sliding your shoe/boot on it.

Take short steps to maintain your center of balance over your feet; walk like a penguin.

Walk slowly; never run on snow or ice covered surfaces.

Travel along grassy edges of walkways that are covered with ice.

Use handrails when using the stairs.

Prior to entering a building “stomp” off excess snow to reduce the snow melt carried into the building. Then repeat the process on the mat inside the building

Keep both hands free for balance, rather than in your pockets or holding items.

Plan ahead; give yourself sufficient time and plan your route.

If you notice an area that is in need of snow or ice removal, contact Physical Plant at (518) 629-7356. During off-hours, report any areas of concern to Public Safety at (518) 629-7210.

If you do slip or fall:

If you begin to fall forward, try to roll with the fall to avoid a more severe injury. Keep your wrist, elbows, and knees bent.

If you begin to fall backward, try to sit down. Fighting a fall on ice can cause twisting or bending injuries.

If you need emergency medical attention, contact Public Safety at (518) 629-7210.

For non-emergency medical attention, report to Health Services, located in the Wellness Center, Campus Center Suite 270.

For additional information, please see the following:

Physical Plant Snow Removal Plan: https://www.hvcc.edu/phyplant/maintenance-grounds.html

IceAlert® system: https://www.icealert.com/ice-alert#pedestrian_section

How to Walk Like a Penguin from Alberta Health Services: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHaWGibGwyk&feature=youtu.be

Winter Safety Tips from the National Safety Council: https://www.nsc.org/home-safety/tools-resources/seasonal-safety/winter

Published: Mon, 11 Nov 2019 13:15:39 +0000 by l.vivekanand

Wintertime brings an increased risk for slips, trips and falls due to slippery parking lots and walkways.
