In particular, professors of history, sociology, and criminal justice are essential in promoting the pathway of understanding.

African American History is American History
John Robert Lewis – Honoring Icons – Good Trouble

Teaching African American History and other Black Studies courses provides an opportunity to fill in the blanks or void about the interconnection of the Civil Rights’ tumultuous past and Dr. Martin Luther King’s soldiers of non-violence. John Robert Lewis continued the quest to embrace America’s diversity and social justice, and the pursuit of King’s dream and beloved community.

I am fortunate to collaborate and develop curriculum, training programs, and seminars to educate students and faculty for the betterment of society here on campus and as a liaison with the SUNY Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion. The value of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, as well as the contributions of differently-abled populations and veterans (protectors of democracy), is a significant component in promoting equity and inclusion.

Congressman Lewis (Feb. 21, 1940 – July 17, 2020) took up the mantel of all the above, following Dr. Martin Luther King’s journey of justice for all and remained committed to the civil rights leader throughout his life. He faithfully represented Georgia’s 5th congressional district from 1987 until he died one week ago.

Lewis and his mentor, minister and civil rights leader Cordy Tindell “C.T.” Vivian shared the common goals of equality and equity. Both died on July 17, 2020. Vivian was just two weeks shy of his 96 birthday.

According to historians, John Lewis is the first Black lawmaker to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, joining the ‘Pantheon of Patriots.’

Professor Tamu Chambers
Department of History, Philosophy and Social Sciences

John Robert Lewis and C.T.
