As students begin the semester, I’m sharing a heart-felt remembrance of an iconic actor and silent activist. Chadwick Boseman (Nov. 29, 1976 –\u00a0 Aug 28, 2020), who portrayed the fictional King T” Challa, is dead at the age of 43, but his spirit lives on in his many accomplishments in movies and humanitarian deeds. Boseman, the lead character of the phenomenal movie “Black Panther” that transcends race\u00a0 nationally and globally, will continue to impact generations to come.<\/p>\n

Boseman’s exceptional contributions in understanding the significance of higher education and self-determination are inspiring to all students. They extend to African American History, the History of Africa, and equally important to American History courses.<\/p>\n

As the Black Panther, Boseman exemplifies the cultural impact and identity of fostering equity and inclusion. Many in the African American community throughout the nation and the world, are grief-stricken. His grace, intellect and strength are memorialized in the characters he played in the movies — Jackie Robinson in “42” and the first African American Supreme Court Justice in “Marshall.” His role as the superhero in “Black Panther,” the 2018 Marvel Cinematic Universe film, made him an international star, winning him an NAACP Image Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.<\/p>\n

In the commencement speech<\/a> he delivered at his alma mater, Howard University, Boseman talks about his conflicts with identity and the knowledge of self-awareness. His talent — on and off-screen — demonstrates that calm vs. chaos is a choice.<\/p>\n

As professors, “Reimagining Education” during chaotic times requires researching and connecting the contributions of racial, ethnic, religious, gender, differently-abled, and other marginal groups. Collectively, critical thinking requires that educators practice critical thinking methods for students to engage in thoughtful communication relatable to the various curriculum.<\/p>\n
