{"id":14942,"date":"2020-10-14T12:05:03","date_gmt":"2020-10-14T16:05:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wednesdays-words-of-wellness-12\/"},"modified":"2020-10-14T12:05:03","modified_gmt":"2020-10-14T16:05:03","slug":"wednesdays-words-of-wellness-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wednesdays-words-of-wellness-12\/","title":{"rendered":"Wednesday&#8217;s Words of Wellness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">October 14<\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Words of Wellness are resources for students to access and utilize<br \/>\nto improve and maintain their overall wellness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While the <strong>Wellness Center\u2019s Counseling and Wellness Services<\/strong> are available Monday \u2013 Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for counseling, consultation, and referral needs on a remote basis (phone or video session), we wanted to share additional resources that may be beneficial.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-113139\" src=\"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/communication-graphic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"207\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For today\u2019s Words of Wellness, we will be focusing on <strong>Communication<\/strong>. As humans, we communicate in so many different ways. There is verbal communication where we are explicitly stating what we are thinking or feeling through words or text and there is nonverbal communication such as body language, facial expressions, and our behavior that can indicate how we are feeling and what we are thinking. We are constantly communicating each and every day, however there often isn&#8217;t a class we take growing up that informs us as to how to communicate effectively with others. For as much as we talk and communicate throughout our day, there are things left unsaid. These are often feelings, emotions, or thoughts that we have difficulty expressing, but they can also be snippets of information about how we want to be supported and how someone can check in with us.\u00a0 Throughout this post you will find several handouts that discuss helpful tips and information regarding communication, provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therapistaid.com\/therapy-worksheets\/communication\/none\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TherapistAid.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Passive, Aggressive, and Assertive Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-113141\" src=\"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/assertive-aggressive-passive-passive-aggressive-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Therapist Aid explains that &#8220;communication skills are an essential foundation&#8221; for interacting with ourselves and the world around us. &#8220;Everyone uses each of the communication styles from time-to-time, but many people tend to lean on one more heavily. The Passive, Aggressive, and Assertive Communication worksheet gives an overview of each communication style, along with tips to help you recognize each one. This provides a great starting point for conversations about communication styles, and replacing aggression and passivity with assertiveness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As the graphic above describes, Assertive Communication is the most effective form of communication because it is a win-win scenario. We are expressing what we need and what we feel, as we are caring about the other person or people in the conversation. Assertive communication is defined by mutual respect, diplomacy, and directness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Our Assertive Communication worksheet includes one page of psychoeducation, and a second page of practice exercises, that will help you learn to use assertive communication in your own life.&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0 TherapistAid.com<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therapistaid.com\/worksheets\/assertive-communication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Assertive Communication<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>&#8220;I&#8221; Statements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-113142\" src=\"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/I-statement.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">TherapistAid.com states that &#8220;When a person feels that they are being blamed \u2014 whether rightly or wrongly \u2014 it\u2019s common that they respond with defensiveness. \u201cI\u201d statements are a simple way of speaking that will help you avoid this trap by reducing feelings of blame. A good \u201cI\u201d statement takes responsibility for one\u2019s own feelings, while tactfully describing a problem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Our &#8220;I&#8221; Statements worksheet includes education and tips that will help you apply the technique in real-life situations, along with several practice examples.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therapistaid.com\/worksheets\/i-statements.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;I&#8221; Statements Worksheet<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Active Listening<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-113144 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/active-listening-skills-450x338.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;There\u2019s more to being a good listener than hearing the words another person says. For effective communicators, listening is an active process, rather than a passive one. An active listener is a participant in a conversation \u2014 not just an audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0Active Listening\u00a0worksheet breaks the communication skill into three steps: show you\u2019re listening, encourage sharing, and strive to understand. The worksheet describes skills for each step, such as using verbal and nonverbal cues and asking open-ended questions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although none of the individual skills are complicated, they can be difficult to use consistently. After reviewing the skills in the handout, take turns role-playing as an active listener and speaker.&#8221; &#8212; TherapistAid.com<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therapistaid.com\/worksheets\/active-listening.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Active Listening Communication Skill Worksheet<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Reflections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-113145\" src=\"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/women-talking-300x158.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;Reflections are a powerful tool to improve communication. This worksheet includes one page of education with an overview of how to use reflections (including tips and an example), followed by one page of practice statements.&#8221;&#8211; TherapistAid.com. Using reflections is a great way for those involved in a conversation to feel heard, understood and supported, without feeling the pressure of trying to give or receive advice.
