{"id":15004,"date":"2020-10-23T12:00:44","date_gmt":"2020-10-23T16:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/office-of-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-receives-national-stem-award\/"},"modified":"2020-10-23T12:00:44","modified_gmt":"2020-10-23T16:00:44","slug":"office-of-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-receives-national-stem-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/office-of-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-receives-national-stem-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion receives national STEM award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113597\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113597\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/STEM-award-recipients.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-113597\" src=\"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/STEM-award-recipients-450x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113597\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Inspiring Programs in STEM&#8221; award recipients, pictured with President Roger Ramsammy (center), are Chief Diversity Officer Ainsley Thomas; Zo\u00eb O&#8217;Brey, student athlete retention mentoring program director; Taunya Hannibal-Williams, community outreach coordinator, and Mac-Arthur Louis, adjunct faculty, Computing and Information Systems.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hudson Valley Community College\u2019s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) is one of 74 colleges and universities to receive national recognition for programs that are making a difference for those who are underrepresented in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInspiring Programs in STEM\u201d award winners were selected by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightintodiversity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">INSIGHT Into Diversity<\/a> magazine and recognize efforts to inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers in STEM through mentoring, teaching, research and other program initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Nominations were sought in April and the award recipients were featured in the magazine&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightintodiversity.com\/past-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 2020<\/a> issue.<\/p>\n<p>The award recognizes ODEI&#8217;s STEM Outreach Workshop Initiative (SOWI), a free, online workshop series launched in summer 2020. Taunya Hannibal-Williams coordinated the initiative and the workshops were facilitated by Mac-Arthur Louis. Python programming language was taught for introductory to intermediate\/advanced skill levels and the workshops focused on gaming, robotics or business settings. The sessions were open to middle and high schools students, as well as adult caregivers.
