They are 90% more efficient, contain no harmful gases, and can last up to 20 years!

Change laundry settings
Wait until you have a full load and then do laundry on cold wash (BRIGHT COLOR SETTING). It not only extends the lifespan and vibrancy of clothing, but it also saves 90% of the energy that would have been used to heat the water.

Clear vents
If you feel that the temperature in your room doesn’t match your thermostat, something may be in front of and blocking the air registers! Move some furniture and large items so the air can circulate more freely and improve heating system efficiency by 25 percent.

Unplug devices
Do a routine check to make sure chargers, adapters and small appliances are unplugged before heading out of house. Phantom energy is the electricity that electronics pull from the outlet while plugged in. Even when the device is off, it can waste as much as 10 percent of your home’s energy.

Adjust temperature settings
Sets thermostats to 68 degrees when at home and 60 degrees go out. Keeps the fan setting to LOW. This creates a space of optimal comfort, health, and productivity.

Turn it off
Turn off EVERYTHING before heading out the door. Lights. Bathroom vents. Computer. TV.

Make it easy
Make it easy on yourself, plug in all computer and electronic equipment into a central power strip and then just hit the switch!

Manage power settings
Make sure your computer isn’t wasting any unnecessary energy. Set power management settings to Energy Saver Mode and got rid of screen savers. This cuts energy consumption and prolongs the computer’s battery life!

Use your blinds
Uses daylight wisely by keeping drapes open during the day to let in the warm rays and closed at night to keep out drafts.

Take the stairs
Take the stairs instead of the elevator. It’s good for your health and a good way to save some kWh!
(A kWh equals the amount of energy you would use by keeping a 1,000 watt appliance running for one hour.)

Faculty, staff and students, please share your sustainable ideas for our weekly tip to j.coons@hvcc.edu.

Published: Tue, 19 Jan 2021 12:55:36 +0000 by j.coons

Sustainability Tip of the Week A simple wish for a better tomorrow How can energy efficiency be more sustainable?…

[161

post-15410","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-student-announcement-college-related
["GET
