{"id":15455,"date":"2021-01-27T13:00:24","date_gmt":"2021-01-27T18:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/stem-outreach-workshop-initiative-announces-robo-coders-champion\/"},"modified":"2021-01-27T13:00:24","modified_gmt":"2021-01-27T18:00:24","slug":"stem-outreach-workshop-initiative-announces-robo-coders-champion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/stem-outreach-workshop-initiative-announces-robo-coders-champion\/","title":{"rendered":"STEM Outreach Workshop Initiative announces Robo Coders champion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 17, 2020, HVCC\u2019s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion celebrated the culmination of Phase I of its <a href=\"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/office-of-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-receives-national-stem-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">award-winning<\/a> STEM Outreach Workshop Initiative (SOWI ) with a virtual award ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>SOWI consists of three phases, geared toward engaging underrepresented minorities and females in STEM subjects, building skills and an interest in pursuing STEM degrees, and becoming teachers and life-long mentors.<\/p>\n<p>SOWI\u2019s 2020 summer camp was the first phase. Mac-Arthur Louis of the Vicano Group facilitated five coding and robotics workshops featuring Python, a language used by several major businesses. Over 50 participants reflected a diverse array of middle and high school students referred by community collaborators, as well as adults interested in the application of Python in workforce development.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_117251\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117251\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abhi-Sarkar.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-117251\" src=\"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abhi-Sarkar.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-117251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Congratulations Abhi!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To gauge what had been learned throughout the summer, participants earned points from completing homework and other activities, that enabled them to build a skill set for competing in the first SOWI Robo Coders Tournament. Of the five finalists, the champion who gathered the most points in the inaugural tournament was Abhiroop Sarkar (Abhi).<\/p>\n<p>College President Dr. Rogert Ramsammy, Ainsley Thomas, the college\u2019s chief diversity officer, and Dean Jonathan Ashdown attended the award ceremony to convey their congratulations. As a special treat, an NAO robot donated by Dr. Ashdown was programmed by Coach Louis to mimic a Jazz musician and do a celebratory disco dance! Participants also shared their thoughts about SOWI:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI liked using logic to solve problems.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI like to make things\u2026 and SOWI helped me advance myself even further with training in coding.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI like the flexibility of doing SOWI online\u2026and look forward to next year.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI really enjoyed coding different things. It was really fun for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phase II of SOWI will continue the robotics theme. Participants from the greater Capital District will form a Robotics team that will meet on Saturdays during the remainder of the school year and participate in competitions.
