Counseling and Wellness Services<\/strong> is sharing the following message from Chancellor Jim Malatras, who is encouraging all members of the SUNY community to complete a free, one-hour mental health<\/a> emergency intervention training called QPR. The next few weeks through the end of June can be highly stressful for students, so now is a critical time to take advantage of this program.<\/em><\/p>\n Dear colleagues<\/strong>,<\/p>\n We know the stress of the pandemic has deepened mental health struggles among college students, including an alarming increase in suicidal thoughts. This is a problem we must address urgently and collectively across the SUNY system.<\/p>\n As educators, we may be the first to recognize the signs of a mental health crisis in a student, which means we should know how to respond. That\u2019s why we\u2019re offering a free mental health emergency intervention training called QPR<\/a> (Question, Persuade, Refer) to every member of the SUNY community. It takes less than an hour, and could save a life.<\/p>\n I\u2019m encouraging our campus leaders, faculty, and staff to take this training through the month of May, which is Mental Health Month. Our communications team will be in touch with their counterparts on your campuses soon with messaging materials.<\/p>\n Our success in keeping COVID-19 under control at 64 campuses has shown us that we\u2019re strongest when we all look out for each other.
