Co-tenants at Bruno Stadium for past 20 years meet in exhibition<\/em> TROY – The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team and the Tri-City ValleyCats have shared a ballpark for the past two decades.<\/p>\n They’ll play each other for the first time at 3 p.m. Saturday in an exhibition game at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. It’s free and open to the public.<\/p>\n The ValleyCats, a professional team in the independent Frontier League, opened their spring training on Thursday. HVCC, a Division III junior college, has an 11-16 record with one week left in its regular season before the NJCAA sub-regionals begin.<\/p>\n “We should do this,” said HVCC Head Coach Josh Parrow, a Troy native. “We share the stadium, we have a great relationship… Why not? They need games, we need games, it’s that time of season. We’re going to playoffs, we want to see good competition. That’s the best competition you can see, right? So we’re excited about it. Really excited.”<\/p>\n At the major-league level, the Boston Red Sox have played spring-training exhibitions against Northeastern University, the Yankees faced Virginia Tech and the Phillies have met the University of Tampa.<\/p>\n But the ValleyCats have never taken on HVCC even though they’ve been co-tenants at Bruno Stadium since it opened in 2002 on the school’s campus. The calendar was largely to blame. In their old days as a Houston Astros affiliate, the ValleyCats were a short-season team that didn’t begin playing until mid-June, after the Vikings’ season was over.<\/p>\n Now in their second year in the Frontier League, the ValleyCats open their season a month earlier. Tri-City manager Pete Incaviglia said the exhibition is a good way to ease his team into action.<\/p>\n “Hey, man, just getting the pitchers up and down, getting the fielders running in and out off the field,” Incaviglia said. “I know it sounds simplistic, but get their baseball muscles going. Kind of get over that soreness of just playing a game. And to get a good look at the new guys and see what they bring. I don’t expect anybody to go 4-for-4 or go out there and do anything special.”<\/p>\n The ValleyCats will be the visiting team. They’re using the visitors’ clubhouse while the Vikings remain in the home clubhouse through the end of their season.<\/p>\n Parrow, a Catholic Central graduate, sought to make this game happen. He has fond memories of being a ValleyCats batboy during the 2005 season, when Gregg Langbehn was the manager. Parrow also attended ValleyCats’ camps as a young player.<\/p>\n “Relationships, that’s how (this exhibition) took place,” Parrow, in his third season, said. “It would have happened even if they were short-season. It’s something I’ve always had on my mind.”<\/p>\n HVCC players Jacob Lapham of Lansingburgh, Mike Talavera of Waterford and TJ Strevell of Columbia all attended ValleyCats games when they were children.<\/p>\n “It’s going to be awesome,” Strevell, an outfielder, said. “We always wanted to do this as kids, so we get to play… a pro team, right? It’s going to be really fun for us.”<\/p>\n Lapham, a pitcher, will not see action on Saturday. He went five innings and struck out 10 on Thursday in a victory at Columbia-Greene CC.
