The football team (1-5) was defeated by Nassau Community College (6-0), 34-7, on Saturday at home. The Lions remain undefeated on the season and on top of the Northeast Football Conference with the win as the Vikings fall to 1-4 in the NFC.<\/p>\n
Nassau began the game with an impressive opening drive for a touchdown, failing on the two-point conversion to make it 6-0 with 11:41 remaining in the first quarter. After stopping Hudson Valley on its first two possessions, Nassau broke a 65-yard touchdown run with 2:09 left in the quarter. Down 13-0, the Vikings put together an 80-yard drive on six plays that was capped off by a one-yard Kenny Youngs (Lansingburgh, Lansingburgh) touchdown run. This made the score 13-7 at the half.<\/p>\n
The third quarter was evenly matched for the majority until Nassau blocked a Hudson Valley punt and took possession on the Vikings’ 17 yard line. The defense for Hudson Valley couldn’t hold off the Lions as they scored a touchdown on the fourth play of the drive with 1:29 remaining in the third quarter.<\/p>\n
The dagger came on the Vikings’ ensuing possession as they were at mid-field and driving. A poorly executed reverse resulted in a fumble that was scooped and returned 45 yards for a touchdown, making the score 27-7 and putting the game out of reach. Nassau followed the fumble return with a 62 yard punt return for a touchdown in the game’s waning moments to make the final 34-7.<\/p>\n
As for Hudson Valley’s bright spots, running back Kenny Youngs had another tremendous afternoon with 131 yards rushing on 20 carries. Fellow running back and Lansingburgh native Nyquan McGirt (Lansingburgh, Lansingburgh) had a solid day as well with 51 yards on 10 carries. Defensively, the Vikings’ leading tackler on the season, Sidiq Souleman (Clinton DeWitt, Bronx) had another great day with 9.5 total tackles, including seven solo tackles. Corner back James Bryant (White Plains, White Plains) had nine solo tackles on the day.<\/p>\n
The Vikings travel to play Alfred State on Saturday, Oct. 16.<\/p>\n
