{"id":21349,"date":"2024-01-11T12:35:35","date_gmt":"2024-01-11T17:35:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/understanding-respiratory-illness-2\/"},"modified":"2024-01-11T12:35:35","modified_gmt":"2024-01-11T17:35:35","slug":"understanding-respiratory-illness-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/understanding-respiratory-illness-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding Respiratory Illness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Happy New Year to all!<\/p>\n<p>Below is a brief overview of current seasonal\u00a0 viruses and self-care measures to empower individuals in advocating for their own health.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Flu<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>COVID-19<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Overview<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cold, Flu, RSV<\/strong><br \/>\nMost people \u2013 including children \u2013 will recover from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/diseases\/communicable\/respiratory_syncytial_virus\/understanding.htm\">the flu<\/a> on their own, but some people will experience severe illness requiring hospitalization.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/diseases\/communicable\/respiratory_syncytial_virus\/understanding.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Respiratory Syncytial Virus<\/a> (RSV) infection can cause severe infection in some people, including babies 12 months and younger, especially premature babies, seniors, people with heart and lung disease, or anyone with a weak immune system (immunocompromised).<\/p>\n<p>In adults and older, healthy children, RSV symptoms are mild and typically mimic the common cold. Self-care measures are usually all that&#8217;s needed to relieve any discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>If you are ill, seek medical care.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/diseases\/communicable\/respiratory_syncytial_virus\/understanding.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19<\/a> can cause severe infection in some people, including children, and can lead to hospitalization and even death.
