On Aug. 15, members of the Honors College assembled at the Northeast Regional Food Bank in Latham to help sort a huge assortment of produce. This was a special activity that brought together students from both the first and second cohorts, showcasing their enthusiasm and passion to serve the community. With the fall semester only a few weeks away, they were eager to get together during the summer break, exemplifying two important pillars of the Honors College: service and fellowship.<\/p>\n

The students worked seamlessly together unpacking boxes of donated produce, including bananas, lettuce, coriander, oranges, strawberries and potatoes. They carefully inspected the items and sorted them into packages to be delivered the next day to various food pantries in the Capital Region. Any food items that were not deemed acceptable to deliver to the pantries did not go to waste. The food bank takes great pride in diminishing their carbon footprint, so any produce waste is collected separately and used as compost for farm animals. The students did an impressive job of packing up over 200 boxes of produce and over 500 pounds of food compost! The volunteer job done, the students then enjoyed ice cream and socialized at the Control Tower Ice Cream Shop.<\/p>\n
