{"id":2499,"date":"2011-09-02T11:00:15","date_gmt":"2011-09-02T15:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/z-grade-reminder-please-include-definition-on-your-syllabus\/"},"modified":"2011-09-02T11:00:15","modified_gmt":"2011-09-02T15:00:15","slug":"z-grade-reminder-please-include-definition-on-your-syllabus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/z-grade-reminder-please-include-definition-on-your-syllabus\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Z&#8221; Grade Reminder&#8211;Please include definition on your syllabus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Effective with the Fall 2011 semester, the college will no longer be identifying a \u201cZ grade date\u201d for all faculty to use, nor will the college require the submission of attendance records.\u00a0 Rather, each individual faculty member must define on the syllabus when a Z grade will be assigned.\u00a0 A Z grade will still signify \u201cabsent without withdrawal\u201d or in other words, an unofficial withdrawal.\u00a0 The difference now is that a faculty member may choose when the appropriate cutoff date is for a Z grade.<\/p>\n<p>Although official attendance books will not be distributed and attendance will not be required to be taken, there is nothing that precludes a faculty member from continuing to take attendance or use attendance when determining a student\u2019s grade.\u00a0 Similarly, attendance may continue to be the basis for the determination of a Z grade.<\/p>\n<p>The Z grade is not an option; by federal regulation, a Z grade must be defined.\u00a0 Some possible definitions are listed below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> A Z grade will be given to any student who does not attend class after the official course withdrawal deadline.<\/li>\n<li>A Z grade will be given to any student who does not attend after week X (fill in the appropriate week number).<\/li>\n<li>A Z grade will be given to any student who does not attend after (a specific date (i.e., the 60% point)).<\/li>\n<li>A Z grade will be given to any student who does not submit work after (a specific date).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although a department can not have any written policy with regard to the Z grade, your department chairperson may provide additional suggested language.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Published:<\/strong>\u00a0Fri, 02 Sep 2011 11:00:15 +0000 by\u00a0k.petley<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Effective with the Fall 2011 semester, the college will no longer be identifying a \u201cZ grade date\u201d for all&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2086,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2499","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-campus-announcements"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2499","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2086"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2499"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2499\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2499"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2499"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2499"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
