{"id":2580,"date":"2011-09-28T11:10:30","date_gmt":"2011-09-28T15:10:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/annual-campus-fire-safety-inspection-starts-today\/"},"modified":"2011-09-28T11:10:30","modified_gmt":"2011-09-28T15:10:30","slug":"annual-campus-fire-safety-inspection-starts-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/annual-campus-fire-safety-inspection-starts-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual Campus Fire Safety Inspection: Starts Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 28, the NYS fire inspector will be on campus for the college&#8217;s annual fire safety inspection. The inspection will take about five days to complete.<\/p>\n<p>In preparation for the inspection, Environmental Health &amp; Safety staff have inspected all buildings. Please help us by taking a moment to check your work area. Here are guidelines for good fire safety practices that should be followed at all times:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Power strips &amp; extension cords<\/strong>:\u00a0 Do not use in series to reach an outlet; do not overload by plugging in more appliances than the circuit can handle.\u00a0 Submit a work order to Physical Plant if your area needs electrical service \u2013 this is a common violation during the inspection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fire doors (self-closing)<\/strong>:\u00a0 Keep these doors closed as much as possible.\u00a0 If you need to chock open a door, please remember to remove the chock and close the door before leaving.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exits &amp; exit pathways<\/strong>:\u00a0 keep clear and unobstructed<\/li>\n<li><strong>Materials storage<\/strong>:\u00a0 Keep to a minimum and do not store materials in stairwells or underneath stairs.\u00a0 Do not store furnishings\/materials in basement hallways, electrical or mechanical rooms \u2013 call Physical Plant to have unneeded materials\/furnishings properly stored or disposed.\u00a0 Keep storage rooms neat and orderly<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shops, labs and work areas<\/strong>:\u00a0 Keep neat and orderly.\u00a0 Chemicals should be stored in labeled, closed containers in the appropriate location.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Damaged electrical cords<\/strong>:\u00a0 Take equipment out of service and notify your supervisor or Physical Plant<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emergency equipment <\/strong>(electrical panel boxes, mechanical rooms, sprinkler controls, fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, etc.):\u00a0 Keep access to these areas\/equipment clear and unobstructed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fire lanes<\/strong>:\u00a0 Keep clear at all times \u2013 no parking in a marked lane<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ceiling tiles<\/strong>:\u00a0 Missing ceiling tiles should be put back in place or <strong>reported to Physical Plant<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Exit signage and emergency lights<\/strong>:\u00a0 These should be illumination at all times; report deficiencies to Physical Plant<\/li>\n<li><strong>REPORT ALL FIRES<\/strong>:\u00a0 Even if it is a minor fire that is quickly extinguished, you are required to report this to Public Safety.
