If you do not yet own a smartphone, juggle profiles on various social media sites or send and receive hundreds of text messages a day, you many increasingly find yourself in the minority. Many see a worrying trend and some experts have already begun to sound the alarm about our society’s addiction to technology.

As the stress of midterms recedes into the background and spring break approaches, consider spending some time away from technology so that the mind and body can truly heal — especially if you find yourself mindlessly browsing the internet.

Instead…

Get some sleep to recover from long nights of studying or working.

Limit daily internet activity to about 15-20 minutes in the morning and evening. This includes, checking e-mail, texting and browsing. You may even want to try going for a day or two with no internet use at all.

Use the time gained by reducing technology use to read for leisure, go for a hike or walk, visit friends, meditate, volunteer, write a letter or simply do nothing.

When engaging in the activities above, be sure to leave the smartphone behind.

Get some more sleep.

As our use of technology increases, the importance of disconnecting from time to time will increase as well. Our bodies, minds and spirits will be thankful for it.

Peace and blessings.

Cylon George, M.A.
Campus Chaplain
facebook.com/hvcccampusministry

Published: Thu, 15 Mar 2012 11:40:06 +0000 by c.george

It is amazing how the use of technology has proliferated in our society in the last few years.
