Lail’s current exhibition, “The World We Lost” at Masters&Pelavin in New York, is on view through May 19.

In the tradition of history painting, Lail’s large-scale collages chart the persistent dream and tragedy of our lost Utopias. In Lail’s works, image fragments sourced from communes of the 1960s and 1970s, Modernist structures and idealized communities form the domes and maps of futurist/architect Buckminster Fuller to examine our persistent strivings and ideological failings — haunted always by Goya’s disasters and the gritty realities of Courbet.
