The presentation is part of ongoing Earth Week activities at the college. Taking place at <strong>noon to 12:50 p.m.<\/strong> and again at<strong> 1 to 1:50 p.m.<\/strong>, the talks focus on hydroponics, urban gardens, rainwater collection\/purification and composting. A teacher, activist and ecological designer, Kellogg opened Radix in 2009 to demonstrate environmental technologies and sustainable micro-industries for today\u2019s urban environment. He is the author, along with Susan Pettigrew, of \u201cToolbox for Sustainable City Living: A Do-It-Ourselves Guide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Earth Day<\/strong> celebration on <strong>Thursday, April 25<\/strong> features eco-friendly vendors, environmental demonstrations and information, a seed and plant exchange and a cell phone collection booth.<\/p>\n<p>On that day, <strong>Bill Reinhardt<\/strong>, former senior project manager at NYSERDA and cofounder of SustaiNYSERDA, discusses how peak oil and climate change issues will affect the potential career paths of students in a talk titled, <strong>\u201cEnergy, Environment and a Sustainable Economy: What Does This Mean for Today\u2019s Students?\u201d <\/strong>Taking place from <strong>noon to 12:50 p.m.<\/strong> in the<strong> Bulmer Telecommunications Center Auditorium<\/strong>, Reinhardt\u2019s talk is sponsored by the college\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hvcc.edu\/voices\/\">Voices committee<\/a> and is the last in its spring 2013 series of lectures.<\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with Earth Day, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hvcc.edu\/ehs\/sustainability\/index.html\">Sustainability Committee<\/a> is sponsoring an <strong>Electronics Recycling<\/strong> event on <strong>Friday, April 12<\/strong> from <strong>10 a.m. to 4 p.m.<\/strong> in the parking lot off <strong>Holliday Drive (next to BTC)<\/strong>.<strong> <\/strong>Recycle used electronics free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>The Sustainability Committee is now collecting seeds, bulbs and small rooted plants for the Earth Day exchange. All must be non-invasive species, preferably natives, and seeds must be no more than one year old. Contact\u00a0Maxine Ortiz at 629-7787\u00a0or <a href=\"mailto:m.ortiz@hvcc.edu\" target=\"_blank\">m.ortiz@hvcc.edu<\/a> to arrange for drop-off\/pick up of your donations any time before Earth Day.<\/p>\n<p>Cell phones collected on Earth Day will be sold to Verizon Wireless. Those that include installed sim cards, chargers and accessories can be reconditioned and donated to victims of domestic violence; phones without these items will be recycled. All proceeds from this effort will be donated to the college\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hvcc.edu\/studentactivities\/pantry.html\">food pantry<\/a>.
