Bulmer Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry entry-content fix\">\n<p class=\"first-para\">The <strong>2013-2014 deadline<\/strong> for this year&#8217;s faculty submission of student research papers is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Friday, April 25, 2014<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The recipient of the Dr. Joseph J. Bulmer Award for Excellence in Library Research, which recognizes a student\u2019s outstanding accomplishment in library-based research, will be selected by the Dwight Marvin Writing &amp; Research Center faculty. This is a very prestigious award, comes with a monetary sum of $150, the student\u2019s name on a perpetual plaque in the Marvin Library and recognition at Student Honors Convocation and in the commencement program. Being chosen for this award is a boost to a student\u2019s transfer application, job application and confidence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To be eligible, a student must be nominated by the faculty member for whom the research assignment was completed. The work nominated must have received a grade of \u201cA\u201d from the nominating faculty member.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Award selection criteria are as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Extensive bibliography with minimum of five sources and a variety of formats, including but not limited to:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>books in hard copy or electronic format<\/li>\n<li>scholarly journal articles<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0magazine and\/or newspaper articles<\/li>\n<li>reputable websites<\/li>\n<li>primary sources (such as interviews, diaries, speeches and newspaper articles!)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Evidence of initiative, persistence and ingenuity in identifying sources<\/li>\n<li>Evidence of critical thinking in evaluating sources for credibility and appropriateness<\/li>\n<li>Correct citation format<strong> (Improper citations often disqualify a submission. Please stress to your students that correct MLA, APA, and\/or Chicago Manual format is a must to be eligible for this award!)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Free of plagiarism \u2013 authentic work required<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dr. Bulmer established the award in 1989 when he was president of the college. The library has continued the tradition for more than 20 years by selecting multiple winners, who received modest awards and recognition. In 2009-10, one award of $150 was instituted from a fund managed by the college\u2019s Foundation for the specific purpose of recognizing library research excellence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligible papers received from faculty after the April 25,\u00a02014 due date may be submitted for consideration for the 2014-15 award<\/strong>. Additionally, research papers which were graded or submitted after last year&#8217;s 2012-2013 (April 26) deadline may be submitted for the 2013-14 Bulmer Award, if still available to the faculty member.
