{"id":5295,"date":"2014-04-11T12:18:32","date_gmt":"2014-04-11T16:18:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/18th-annual-viking-challenge\/"},"modified":"2014-04-11T12:18:32","modified_gmt":"2014-04-11T16:18:32","slug":"18th-annual-viking-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/18th-annual-viking-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"18th Annual Viking Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hudson Valley Community College\u2019s 18<sup>th<\/sup> Annual Viking Challenge:\u00a0 A Game in Trivial Pursuit, was held on Wednesday evening, April 9, with nine local high schools sending teams:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academy Of Holy Names<\/li>\n<li>Christian Brothers Academy<\/li>\n<li>Lansingburgh<\/li>\n<li>Middleburgh<\/li>\n<li>Schuylerville<\/li>\n<li>South Colonie<\/li>\n<li>Troy<\/li>\n<li>Waterford-Halfmoon<\/li>\n<li>Watervliet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The winners were:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>First Place \u2013 Schuylerville<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Second Place \u2013 Academy of Holy Names<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Third Place \u2013 Watervliet<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Schuylerville team consisted of coach Tom Bryson and team members Mike Pumiglia (captain), McKenzie Goldup and Zack Galcik and alternates Shannon Fay and Nate Mausert.\u00a0 Academy of Holy Names was coached by Nancy Manning and team members were Mackenzie Kennedy (captain), Maggie Longo and Regan Edwards.\u00a0 Watervliet\u2019s coach was Mrs. Helenek and the team members were Muhammad Khan (captain), and Tyler Chasten and Sean Flynn, with alternates Brandon Freer and Thomas Brown.<\/p>\n<p>The first-place school received a Netbook donated by Lenovo and each of the winning team members received a $500 scholarship to attend Hudson Valley.<\/p>\n<p>All members of the three winning teams also received scientific calculators and each of the three winning teams received Encyclopedia Britannica software.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge format is based upon the rules of the Trivial Pursuit game.\u00a0 The schools send three-person teams which are comprised of high school students in grades 9-12.\u00a0 Each team has a designated student captain and a faculty coach.\u00a0 There are two elimination rounds and a final round.\u00a0 The order of play for each team is randomly determined based on a drawing before the event and teams have a minute to answer each question until they get a wedge or answer incorrectly.\u00a0 There are five categories for the game and once a team has won wedges for all five, they win the game, followed by second and third place.<\/p>\n<p>There is a reception before the competition begins, and the students and schools are treated to pizza and wings.\u00a0 Throughout the play, all students have the chance to win raffle prizes.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to Schuylerville, Academy of Holy Names and Watervliet!<\/p>\n<p>Photos of the event will posted later today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Published:<\/strong>\u00a0Fri, 11 Apr 2014 12:18:32 +0000 by\u00a0s.brownrigg<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Hudson Valley Community College\u2019s 18th Annual Viking Challenge:\u00a0 A Game in Trivial Pursuit, was held on Wednesday evening, April&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2086,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5295","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-campus-announcements"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5295","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2086"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5295"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5295\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5295"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5295"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5295"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
