Katie M. Burns, first-place winner, and Val Waldin, The librarians and writing specialists are very pleased to announceme our first and second place winning papers for the 2013-1014 Dr. Joseph J. Bulmer Award for Excellence in Library Research.<\/p>\n First place was awarded to Katie M. Burn<\/strong>s for her flawless, scholarly research work:\u00a0 “Postsecondary Correctional Education: Reducing Recidivism through Educational Empowerment”<\/em><\/strong> submitted by Associate Professor Anne Dearing.\u00a0 Katie is exceedingly driven and lives by the following philosophy:\u00a0 “A liberal education… frees a man from the prison-house of his class, race, time, place, background, family \u00a0and even his nation.” ~Robert M. Hutchins<\/p>\n Second-place winner, Melissa Stark<\/strong>, thoroughly researched “What Causes Led to the Uprising in Syria”<\/strong><\/em> and created an outstanding work.\u00a0 Associate Professor Sushmita Chatterji recognized the genuine excellence of this paper and nominated it for this award.<\/p>\n Katie and Melissa each will receive a monetary award, name recognition on a perpetual plaque on the “Wall of Fame” in the library, formal presentation at Student Honors and Awards Ceremony on May 15th, and be included in the Commencement program.<\/p>\n We had truly terrific papers and the choices were not simple. Librarians and writing specialists adhere to the rubric modeled from the American Association of College and Research Libraries\u00a0<\/em> (minimum five sources, variety of formats, evidence of critical thinking in selection process, ingenuity in determining resources, correct citation format — each year great papers are eliminated because of this factor, and authenticity of work).<\/p>\n Being nominated in itself is an honor. Each nominee receives a personalized letter as well as a commemorative certificate congratulating him\/her on this accomplishment.<\/strong><\/p>\n The complete list of our nominees is below.
