On Monday, May 19, the\u00a0Dwight Marvin Library\u00a0will launch its redesigned Web page<\/a>. The new design emphasizes OneSearch, a new system that simultaneously searches the online catalog for books as well as many databases for articles.<\/p>\n The redesigned Web page emphasizes searching library databases. Web analytics\u00a0from the current site indicate that this is the primary use of the library website so this functionality is enhanced. The new design removes many of the infrequently visited links from the main page. Some content shifts to the Marvin Library Learning Commons<\/a> page.<\/p>\n Featured in the redesign, OneSearch\u00a0is a library discovery service, the next generation of library searching characterized by a Google-type search box with results integrating print books, e-books, scholarly journals, newspaper articles, and other resources. A recent article<\/a> in the Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em> describes\u00a0the impact of discovery services in academic libraries (Dwight Marvin Library uses EBSCO Discovery Service as the basis for OneSearch).<\/p>\n Faculty librarians will continue to teach students the value of using specialized databases such as Westlaw, JSTOR, PsycARTICLES, and others; OneSearch is intended to get started with research and to simplify access to scholarly and professional\u00a0sources that aren’t available using Google, Bing, or other search engines. Library discovery services are\u00a0frequently featured on SUNY library websites, including UAlbany’s eDiscover<\/a>, \u00a0New Paltz Discovery Search<\/a>, and UBuffalo’s Search Everything<\/a>, preparing transferring students for the information landscape they are likely to encounter in their future studies.<\/p>\n
