The Black and Latino Student Union (BLSU)<\/strong> Wednesday, Oct. 15<\/strong> \u00a0The event will feature guest and student speakers, salsa lessons with a Pedro Perez<\/strong> Perez is the executive director of the Albany YMCA. He serves as a community leader building collaborations based on trust and credibility to advance the Y\u2019s mission and goals. He is an integral part of the Albany Promise — Cradle to Career initiative, a national initiative called Strive, which focuses on ensuring children are ready to succeed in college and careers by engaging parents and educators in the development of appropriate instructional programs.<\/p>\n As the first Latino commissioned officer the NYS Police, Perez became the agency’s highest ranking Latino commissioned officer when he was appointed to the position of First Deputy Superintendent holding the rank of Brigadier General. As such, he was second in command of the NYS Police while managing a budget of more than half a billion dollars and more than 5,000 employees.<\/p>\n Perez holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from Marist College and a bachelor of science degree from Empire State College. In his free time, he is a percussionist and band leader with the Mambodragonarts, an Afro-Caribbean jazz ensemble.
