Whether you teach online, hybrid, or face-to-face courses,<\/strong><\/span> if you maintain grades in the Grade Centers of your\u00a0Blackboard\u00a0<\/em>courses, you may face the following conundrum: a student wishes to review her\/his grades with you in person, but you can not access your Grade Center to review your student\u2019s grades with her\/him, because it would be a FERPA violation for your student to see the grades of the other students in your course.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n

One solution to this<\/strong><\/span> is to use the\u00a0Smart Views\u00a0<\/strong>feature in\u00a0Blackboard\u00a0<\/em>to create custom views that only display the grades of individual students in your Grade Center (for this and other applications of Smart Views, read the tutorial that the following link points to:\u00a0Smart Views<\/em><\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n

Another solution,<\/strong><\/span> one that eliminates the set-up time involved in creating custom Smart Views, is to use the\u00a0Hide Rows\u00a0<\/strong>function in your\u00a0Blackboard\u00a0<\/em>Grade Center.<\/p>\n

What you do is<\/span> select the round arrow button to the right of the First Name or Last Name of the student in your Grade Center whose grades you want to visually isolate. From the context menu that appears (screenshot below), you then select\u00a0Hide Other Rows<\/strong>. When you do this, the other rows in the Grade Center will become invisible.

To restore your normal Grade Center view,\u00a0select the round arrow button to the right of the First Name or Last Name of the student, and then select\u00a0Show All Rows\u00a0<\/strong>from the context menu (screenshot below).

Another way to display only the grades of a single student,<\/strong><\/span> is to do so through the\u00a0Row Visibility\u00a0<\/strong>page, which is accessible from the\u00a0Manage\u00a0<\/strong>menu in your Grade Center (How do I do that?<\/strong><\/a><\/em>). However, the steps outlined above provide the fastest and most direct way in which to get that result.<\/p>\n

In addition,<\/strong><\/span> you can supplement your student-specific view of grades by generating a printed report of an individual student\u2019s grades using the\u00a0Blackboard\u00a0<\/em>report feature (How do I do that?<\/strong><\/em><\/a>). This would be an effective follow-up in\u00a0a situation where a student also wants printed documentation of his\/her grades. In a situation where the student\u00a0only<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>wants printed documentation of her\/his grades, the printed report would provide you with a preferable alternative.<\/p>\n
