It is a tremendous honor to have this great jurist and role model on our campus. Judge Spain\u00a0wanted to come to HVCC specifically to encourage students to apply for the David A. Garfinkel Scholarship. Please pass the word that this great man and mentor will be on our campus Oct. 27.\u00a0 He will be accompanied by the Assistant Director of the Historical Society of the New York Courts. (Faculty: Please encourage your students to attend!<\/strong>) Judge Spain\u00a0graduated from LaSalle Institute, Boston College and Albany Law School.\u00a0 He began his judicial career in 1978 as Troy Police Court Justice, then went on to Family Court Judge, Justice of the Supreme Court, Administrative Judge and retired in 2013 as Associate Justice of the\u00a0 Appellate Division, Third Department. Judge Spain’s\u00a0continuing commitment to bettering the lives of children is evidenced by his membership on the Chief Judge’s Family Violence Task Force, as chair of the Unified Court System’s Statewide Advisory Committee on Attorneys and Children, and as a member of the New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Children and the Law. His name is synonymous with character, kindness and commitment to the public good.<\/p>\n This award is made available by the Historical Society of the New York Courts\u00a0<\/strong>and provides CUNY and SUNY community college students with a challenging and rewarding academic opportunity. The scholarship has made prior award recipients stand out in their academic and professional pursuits.
