State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher announced that the university system is partnering with Read Aloud 15 Minutes, a national organization that works with schools and communities to increase the time parents spend reading to children.<\/p>\n
Read Aloud partners are united behind the idea that 15 minutes of daily reading aloud from birth to age 8 can change the face of education, nationally. In partnering with Read Aloud, SUNY campuses throughout New York are reaching out to community groups, early childhood education providers, and schools to encourage them to join the Read Aloud movement.<\/p>\n
According to Read Aloud:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Reading aloud is the single most important thing a parent or caregiver can do to help a child prepare for reading and learning.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Nationally, 37% of children arrive in kindergarten without the skills necessary to begin their learning journey.<\/p>\n
\u2022 If a child is not reading at grade level by the end of the first grade, then there is an 88% probability the child will not be reading at grade level by the end of the fourth grade.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Even in higher-income households, nearly 40% of families do not read aloud every day.<\/p>\n
\u2022 More than half the children in this country \u2014 13 million children \u2014 will not hear a bedtime story tonight.<\/p>\n
