Garfinkel Essay Scholarship\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nycourts.gov\/history\/academic-center\/garfinkel-essay-scholarship.html\" target=\"_blank\">David A. Garfinkel Essay Scholarship<\/a>\u00a0, open only to CUNY and SUNY community college students,\u00a0and the <a title=\"Dr. Joseph J. Bulmer Award for Excellence in Library Research\" href=\"http:\/\/hvcc.libguides.com\/bulmeraward\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Joseph J. Bulmer Award for Excellence in Library Research<\/a>, a prestigious Hudson Valley Community College Foundation award.<\/p>\n<p>The 2015 theme\u00a0of the\u00a0<a title=\"David A. Garfinkel Essay Scholarship\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nycourts.gov\/history\/academic-center\/garfinkel-essay-scholarship.html\" target=\"_blank\">David A. Garfinkel Essay Scholarship<\/a>\u00a0is<strong> <em>LGBT: The Road to Equality &#8211; How have the New York courts addressed equal human rights for the LGBT community?<\/em><\/strong> Alumnus Elijah Fagan-Solis, a student of Criminal Justice Professor Kathryn Sullivan, was the 2008 recipient of this award with his essay entitled, <em>&#8220;<a title=\"The Courts and Human Rights in New York: The Legacy of the Lemmon Slave Case\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nycourts.gov\/history\/academic-center\/garfinkel-essay-scholarship-past.html#garfinkel-contest-2008\" target=\"_blank\">The Courts and Human Rights in New York: The Legacy of the Lemmon Slave Case<\/a>.&#8221; <\/em>Students from all disciplines are encouraged to submit an essay for consideration, the deadline is April 1, 2015. Bulmer Award for Excellence in Library Research\" href=\"http:\/\/hvcc.libguides.com\/bulmeraward\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Joseph J. Bulmer Award for Excellence in Library Research<\/a> recipient is selected every spring from faculty nominations across academic departments. The recipient receives an award in the amount of $150, recognition at Student Honors and commencement, and his\/her name is inscribed on a plaque in the Dwight Marvin Library. Faculty librarians evaluate submissions based on the following criteria:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Award selection criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Extensive bibliography with minimum of five sources and various formats, such as books, ebooks, academic journals, news articles, interview, credible website<\/li>\n<li>Evidence of initiative, persistence, and ingenuity in identifying sources<\/li>\n<li>Evidence of critical thinking in evaluating sources for credibility and appropriateness<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Correct citation format\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hvcc.edu\/lrc\/cite.html\" target=\"_blank\">Correct citation format<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Authentic academic work, free of <a title=\"plagiarism\" href=\"http:\/\/hvcc.libguides.com\/content.php?pid=171865&amp;sid=1447563\" target=\"_blank\">plagiarism<\/a> (papers may be reviewed using turnitin.com or similar software)<\/li>\n<li>The work nominated must have received a grade of A from the nominating faculty member.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p>The semester has just started but it is not too early to think about\u00a0research paper topics\u00a0and a plan of action!
