{"id":6316,"date":"2015-02-06T13:42:26","date_gmt":"2015-02-06T18:42:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/alumnus-tapped-for-runners-hall-of-fame\/"},"modified":"2015-02-06T13:42:26","modified_gmt":"2015-02-06T18:42:26","slug":"alumnus-tapped-for-runners-hall-of-fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/alumnus-tapped-for-runners-hall-of-fame\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumnus tapped for runners&#8217; Hall of Fame"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Hudson Mohawk Road Runners Club (HMRRC), one of the largest road racing clubs in the nation with more than 3,000 members, will induct longtime Freihofer\u2019s Run for Women and Troy Turkey Trot Event Director George Regan into its Hall of Fame this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The induction ceremony will take place at a banquet held Saturday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. at The Desmond Albany Hotel and Conference Center.<\/p>\n<p>Regan, a resident of Troy, has overseen the Freihofer&#8217;s Run for Women since 1982 and helped develop the event from a small road race into one of the largest and most prestigious all-women\u2019s road races in the world. He has worked on countless area events, including the annual Troy Turkey Trot, CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge, USATF Masters National Championship, Dunkin\u2019 Run, Fam 5K \u201cFund\u201d Run\/Walk, as well as national club championship track meets at the University at Albany.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to welcome George as our sole 2015 Hall of Fame inductee,\u201d said HMRRC Hall of Fame Committee Chair Cathy Sliwinski. \u201cHe has had a profound influence upon the area of athletics, specifically track and field, cross-country, road racing, and race walking not only here in the Capital Region, but also throughout New York and the rest of the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regan, who becomes the 29th\u00a0person to join the prestigious hall (<a title=\"http:\/\/www.hmrrc.com\/index.cfm?method=MembersOnly.HallOfFame\" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Da1r39\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Da1r39<\/a>) which dates back to 1991, was first introduced to road racing in 1978. He had recently suffered an injury while alpine skiing and was told that running would help him rehabilitate his ailing back.\u00a0\u00a0Regan quickly developed a keen appreciation for the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWilliam (Bill)\u00a0Scheder Sr., a founding HMRRC member and inaugural HMRRC hall of fame inductee, challenged me to run the Adirondack distance run 10-miler in 1980,\u201d recalled Regan.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI was 27 and Bill was 65 and he told me he would beat me and he did\u2026by a large margin!\u00a0\u00a0However, that spurred me on to a career in distance running and I ended up completing 11 marathons with a 2:47 PR at the NYC Marathon in 1983.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regan, who served as the president of the USA Track &amp; Field Adirondack Association from 1983-2005, has received numerous accolades on both the local and national stage for his commitment to the sport of running.\u00a0\u00a0This includes the \u201cPresident&#8217;s Award\u201d from The Athletics Congress\/USA (1987), the USATF\u2019s Women&#8217;s Long Distance Running Committee&#8217;s \u201cService Award\u201d (1990), Men&#8217;s Long Distance Running\u2019s \u201cScott Hamilton Award\u201d (1995), \u201cRace Director of the Year Award\u201d from Road Race Management (1995), and the \u201cHospitality Excellence Award\u201d from the Albany County Convention and Visitors Bureau (1998).<\/p>\n<p>In 1999, his alma mater, Hudson Valley Community College, conferred upon him its \u201cDistinguished Alumnus Award.\u201d Four years later, Regan earned the Master&#8217;s Long Distance Running \u201cOtto Essig Award\u201d for his tireless work promoting masters long distance running in America.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great honor to be inducted into the HMRRC\u2019s hall of fame.\u00a0\u00a0Road racing has been my life\u2019s work and has given me so much pleasure,\u201d said Regan. \u201cI am most proud of my involvement in the Freihofer\u2019s Run for Women, which gives women of all ages throughout the Capital Region, the nation and the world a chance to come together to experience the benefits of exercise and good nutrition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regan resides in Troy with his wife, Terri, and his two daughters.
