In another installment<\/strong><\/span> of\u00a0the\u00a0Bb Rx\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>series of Bb Tips <\/em>for\u00a0faculty whose\u00a0Blackboard<\/em> courses may be\u00a0in need of a tune-up, we’ll take a look at a design “glitch” that is surprisingly common in older\u00a0Bb\u00a0<\/em>courses (but also in newer ones).<\/p>\n

This “glitch”<\/strong><\/span> involves a simple misunderstanding of the respective functions of\u00a0Content Folders\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Content Items<\/strong>. \u00a0The icons for the two alert you to their intended functions: \u00a0a\u00a0Content Folder\u00a0<\/strong>(below left)\u00a0is intended to\u00a0contain\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>content, while a\u00a0Content Item\u00a0<\/strong>(below right)\u00a0is intended to display<\/strong> <\/em>content, and is normally contained\u00a0inside\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>of a\u00a0Content Folder<\/strong>. \u00a0Despite this, it is frequently the case that a\u00a0Bb\u00a0<\/em>course contains a\u00a0Content Folder\u00a0<\/strong>that is functioning like a\u00a0Content Item<\/strong>: \u00a0that is, it is being used to display content rather than contain it.<\/p>\n

Looking through your\u00a0Bb\u00a0<\/em>course(s),<\/strong><\/span> do you see folders, like the example in the following screenshot, that are being used to\u00a0display<\/strong><\/em>, rather than\u00a0contain<\/strong><\/em>, content?<\/p>\n

If so,<\/strong> <\/span>you can quickly fix the “glitch” by following these steps:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Select the\u00a0arrow button\u00a0<\/strong>for the folder, and then select\u00a0Edit\u00a0<\/strong>from the pop-up menu that appears.<\/li>\n
  2. In the\u00a0Edit Content Folder\u00a0<\/strong>window, click inside of the textbox containing your content.<\/li>\n
  3. Select the\u00a0Ctrl\/A\u00a0<\/strong>keyboard combination to highlight all of your content.<\/li>\n
  4. Select the\u00a0Ctrl\/C\u00a0<\/strong>keyboard combination to copy the highlighted\u00a0content.<\/li>\n
  5. Select\u00a0Submit\u00a0<\/strong>to exit the\u00a0Edit Content Folder\u00a0<\/strong>window.<\/li>\n
  6. Select\u00a0Item\u00a0<\/strong>from your\u00a0Build Content\u00a0<\/strong>drop-down menu to create a new content item.<\/li>\n
  7. In the\u00a0Edit Item\u00a0<\/strong>window, give the new content item the same name as the folder.<\/li>\n
  8. Click inside of the empty textbox, and select the\u00a0Ctrl\/V\u00a0<\/strong>keyboard combination to paste in the content that you had copied from your folder.<\/li>\n
  9. Select\u00a0Submit\u00a0<\/strong>to save this content.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Your new Content Item<\/strong><\/span> should look like the example in the below screenshot:<\/p>\n

    Having replaced your Content Folder with a Content Item,<\/strong><\/span> you can go ahead and delete the Content Folder by selecting its\u00a0arrow button<\/strong> and selecting\u00a0Delete\u00a0<\/strong>from the pop-up menu that appears.<\/p>\n
