{"id":7112,"date":"2015-10-13T12:44:28","date_gmt":"2015-10-13T16:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/blackboard-tip-of-the-week-114\/"},"modified":"2015-10-13T12:44:28","modified_gmt":"2015-10-13T16:44:28","slug":"blackboard-tip-of-the-week-114","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wpdev\/blackboard-tip-of-the-week-114\/","title":{"rendered":"Blackboard Tip of the Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bb 9.1 October\u00a02014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Whether you teach online, hybrid, or face-to-face courses,<\/strong> <\/span>if you maintain grades in the Grade Centers of your\u00a0Blackboard\u00a0courses, you may face the following conundrum: a student wishes to review her\/his grades with you in person, but you can not access your Grade Center to review your student\u2019s grades with her\/him, because it would be a FERPA violation for your student to see the grades of the other students in your course.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>One solution to this<\/strong><\/span> is to use the\u00a0<strong>Smart Views<\/strong>\u00a0feature in\u00a0Blackboard\u00a0to create custom views that only display the grades of individual students in your Grade Center (for this and other applications of Smart Views, read the tutorial that the following link points to:\u00a0<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en-us.help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/9.1_Older_Versions\/9.1_SP_10_and_SP_11\/Instructor\/080_Grade_Center\/014_Using_Smart_Views_in_the_Grade_Center\" target=\"_blank\">Smart Views<\/a><\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Another solution,<\/strong><\/span> one that eliminates the set-up time involved in creating custom Smart Views, is to use the\u00a0<strong>Hide Rows<\/strong>\u00a0function in your\u00a0Blackboard\u00a0Grade Center.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>What you do<\/strong><\/span> is select the round arrow button to the right of the First Name or Last Name of the student in your Grade Center whose grades you want to visually isolate. From the context menu that appears (screenshot below), you then select\u00a0<strong>Hide Other Rows<\/strong>. When you do this, the other rows in the Grade Center will become invisible:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/018.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-60276\" src=\"http:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/018.png\" alt=\"01\" width=\"354\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>To restore your normal Grade Center view,<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0select the round arrow button to the right of the First Name or Last Name of the student, and then select\u00a0<strong>Show All Rows<\/strong>\u00a0from the context menu (screenshot below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/024.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-60277\" src=\"http:\/\/chronicle.hvcc.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/024.png\" alt=\"02\" width=\"355\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Another way to display<\/strong><\/span> only the grades of a single student, is to do so through the\u00a0Row Visibility\u00a0page, which is accessible from the\u00a0Manage\u00a0menu in your Grade Center (<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en-us.help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/9.1_Older_Versions\/9.1_SP_10_and_SP_11\/Instructor\/080_Grade_Center\/002_Setting_Up_the_Grade_Center#How_to_Hide_and_Show_Users_in_the_Grade_Center\" target=\"_blank\">How do I do that?<\/a><\/strong><\/em>). However, the steps outlined above provide the fastest and most direct way in which to get that result.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>In addition,<\/strong> <\/span>you can supplement your student-specific view of grades by generating a printed report of an individual student\u2019s grades using the\u00a0Blackboard\u00a0report feature (<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.hvcc.edu\/dl\/?p=1368\" target=\"_blank\">How do I do that?<\/a><\/strong><\/em>). This would be an effective follow-up in\u00a0a situation where a student also wants printed documentation of his\/her grades.
