Zika virus is a mosquito-borne virus that is transmitted to people through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito.
\nOnly one in five affected individuals becomes ill.<\/p>\n
The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (pink eye). Severe symptoms requiring hospitalization is uncommon.<\/p>\n
There are reports of a serious birth defect (microcephaly) and other poor pregnancy outcomes in babies of mothers who were infected with Zika virus while pregnant. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a travel alert for people traveling to regions and certain countries where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.<\/p>\n

\n\u2022 Use EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol. Always follow the product label and use as directed.
\n\u2022 Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear. You can buy pre-treated clothing and gear, or treat them yourself.
\n\u2022 Stay and sleep in screened or air-conditioned rooms.<\/p>\n
