The 400-title collection of music CDs held by the Instructional Media Center now is available for browsing and loan on the first floor of the Marvin Library Learning Commons. Students may borrow CDs for three weeks and employees may borrow CDs for the semester, using the same borrowing policy in place for library books.<\/p>\n
In addition to selecting CDs the old-fashioned way (browsing the shelves), the music CD collection is fully cataloged and can be searched in the library’s online catalog by a variety of methods. Search for performers or composers using the “Author” search option (examples: Bruce Springsteen<\/a>, Duke Ellington<\/a>, Mozart<\/a>). Search musical genres using “Subject” search option (examples: jazz<\/a>, popular music<\/a>, opera<\/a>, rap music<\/a>). \nThe collection was awarded to the college more than 10 years ago as part of a class-action lawsuit settlement by the New York State attorney general. Many libraries throughout the state received similar music CD collections in response to the settlement for price fixing by large music sellers. The collection has received little attention since it was first acquired. As a result, new artists and music released since early 2000s are not represented in the collection. Interest in the collection as gauged by the number of loans of existing CDs will determine whether new music will be added in the future.<\/p>\n
