In keeping with the mission of the Jewish Student Union, we would like to share this information with the Hudson Valley community:<\/p>\n
This year, Tuesday to Wednesday evening is the time of the most solemn holiday of the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur. \u00a0It is a very serious event, sometimes called the Day of Atonement and also called the \u201cSabbath of Sabbaths.\u201d<\/p>\n
So, please don’t ever wish someone a \u201cHappy Yom Kippur!\u201d<\/p>\n
Instead, a preferred greeting is “L\u2019Shanah Tovah.” It means \u201cTo a good year.\u201d\u00a0 Another greeting is “G\u2019mar Chatimah Tovah.\u201d In Hebrew, it means \u201cMay you be sealed in the Book of Life for a good year.”<\/p>\n
Some people wish each other an “easy fast,” since many Jews fast on Yom Kippur and do not work or drive. Instead, the day is spent in the Synagogue seeking forgiveness from G_d.\u00a0 Seeking forgiveness from other human beings and reconciliation with them must be done prior to Yom Kippur.<\/p>\n
